Intent

At St Nicholas’ CE VA Primary School we aim to ensure that all children leave prepared for the world as ‘Global Explorers’, equipped to pursue any career they choose. Being ‘skilful’ is one of the core strands to our curriculum. It is important that all children leave having developed skills and knowledge in computing, which will in turn enable them to access and use technology across all areas of their learning. We aim for children to feel fully empowered in this digital age, with a strong fundamental understanding of word processing, internet research, communication and programming. We want every child to be successful and encourage children to explore and go beyond when they are using technology.

By the end of Foundation Stage it is our intention that all children are able to recognise what a computer is, know its basic function and how to stay safe online.

By the end of KS1 all children are able to understand basic programming (aided by the use of Beebots). They will also be taught basic keyboard skills, how to use the internet to research information, play games and create images using both laptops and I-Pads.

By the end of KS2 all children will further develop the skills taught in KS1, developing programming skills using computer programmes such as Scratch to write code. Children will also be taught to use the internet and search engines primarily using the laptops and I-Pads. 

At St Nicholas, children in KS1 and KS2 are taught about the risks and benefits of using digital equipment (computers, photographic and recording equipment, tablets, mobile phones etc) and the rules that will keep them safe when using this technology.  Children annually take part in ‘Safer Internet Day’ activities.
